Cost-slicing It With your Natural Hair
As a Southern black girl in Brooklyn, I’ve observed that way more black women round here wear their hair pure than the place I’m from (most black girls chemically straighten their hair). I’ve gone pure most of my life, so I do know too properly how costly getting un-relaxed hair performed may be: upward of $a hundred for a full wash, set and elegance, in comparison with $30 for a woman who uses relaxer. When i moved here, I assumed the recognition of going pure in Brooklyn would translate to more cheap costs. I was wrong—it doesn’t. But I have found a number of ways to cut costs with my hair-care… and even afford the occasional salon-pampering (hint: discount to come).
Mirelle Liong-A-Kong, the Brooklyn-based creator of Going Natural and administrator of Going-Pure.com suggests assembly your stylist halfway, as many pure salons charge individually for every service. “Braids and extensions could take 5 hours (to apply). Present up along with your hair washed and clear, and convey your individual merchandise with you.” Karama Brown, creator of the blog SavvyBrown.com, also advises trimming your individual hair prior to a salon go to. One easy way for women to do this is to separate the hair into two-strand twists, chopping the ends while on this fashion.
But if you’re nonetheless unable (or stubbornly unwilling) to afford that salon go to, Brown has some solutions for how the pure woman on a funds can put on her hair simply for a whole week:
1) “Wear your hair in a puff,” says Brown. “I wrote an article on how to scrub and dry your hair in a single hour. The key is a giant ole shammy I bought at AutoZone for $4. What’s the difference between the thing guys use to dry their vehicles and the microfiber hair towel I noticed at Bed Bath & Past for $22 The difference is $18.” After washing and drying, she ties her hair again with the minimize leg of a stocking.
2) Wear twist-outs: It is a famously easy protective model. When the hair is wet, put your hair into two-strand twists with slightly natural gel. Let dry, then undo the subsequent day for a crinkly, wavy look. The longer you let your twists dry, the more outlined with twist-out might be.
3) After the initial definition of the loose twist-out wears off, pull the hair again right into a puff or bun, again utilizing the stocking leg. Brown recommends making use of a bit castor oil or Get Set hair jelly (2 oz. jar for $5), tying the hair again, and shaking it out.
4) Stop making an attempt to make your hair appear to be somebody else’s. Don’t fight it or buy unnecessary merchandise that tout their potential to make kinky hair curly. Embrace your individual texture and work with it, using as few substances as attainable.
Why are pure-hair salons so costly Pure strands are much less porous and can have a nasty reaction to cheaper merchandise with chemical additives. So, salons catering to natural hair spend extra money on natural merchandise. And the extra women who shun chemical straightening (in Brooklyn, particularly), the extra who use pure elements of their everyday lives and select like-minded salons. “Natural is trendy,” says Yendys Nefer-Atum, proprietor of The Cowrie Shell Heart, a natural hair salon in Mattress-Stuy that makes a speciality of locs.
But, excessive-value aside, everybody wants that salon-particular treatment every so usually. So here’s just a little something to assist with that: For the month of July, The Cowrie Shell Middle is providing a 30 p.c discount to Brokelyn readers for all pure hair providers. We are a natural hair salon here in Houston and our costs are no where close to what I’ve seen naturals discuss with. I personally don’t consider in charging an arm and leg. It must be less stress on the pocketbook. Nonetheless, pure or not, u will at all times need deep situation, wash, and occassional scorching oil therapy. We don’t charge more but we do emphasis that you need to get these things achieved, regardless. Examine us out!
